The Campaign for the Fairhope Soccer Complex

The Fairhope Soccer Complex opened March 2017 with hundreds of cleats hitting brand new sod - capping years of vision, planning and effort by the City of Fairhope, the Fairhope Soccer Club, and community soccer supporters.

Since its beginnings in Fairhope in the late 1980’s, families, children, coaches and volunteers have shared not just in the love of a sport but the community fellowship, sportsmanship, character and life lessons found in the game.  Easily 10,000 boys and girls ages 3-18 have counted Fairhope Soccer Club a part of their lives.

Until now,  games took place on Saturday mornings at Founders Park – a 25 acre gift from the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation now showing its age and limits in keeping up with the sport.

Property for the new complex was purchased in 2009 by the City of Fairhope, followed with installation of parking, lighting and sod. The Club contributed funding for equipment and goals, and a matching contribution between the Fairhope Single Tax Colony and City added the concession/restroom complex.

But there’s much more ahead to get to the goal. THE NEED:

concrete sidewalks

safety netting between fields and bordering street

improved overflow parking

shade pavilions

additional restrooms

stadium bleachers

SCORE – The Campaign for the Soccer Complex - is a fundraising mission to provide everything beyond the very basics. Our fields – and children – still need concrete sidewalks, overflow parking, shade pavilions, and safety fencing within and on the park’s exterior facing both Manley Road and CR 13. In addition, we lack a playground, tournament stands, additional bathrooms and other components of the first-class facilities our teams find in other cities around the state.

The youth of Fairhope deserve no less.

Sports tourism is essential to a healthy community - we call it the “hidden economic engine” because folks come in, spend, and leave. And the impact formulas are real. And with the size of our state, collegiate and regional tournaments – we could easily use Fairhope fields for overflow play and practice if they had the facilities.
— Don Staley, Former Executive Director Sports Tourism Complex

The Story

The Story

Club Soccer dribbled to the Eastern Shore decades ago, but didn’t officially arrive at Fairhope High School until 1985. The Girls and Boys programs would grow under the leadership of coaches like Tim Alford, Eddie Strachan, Paul Stroud and Bob Keyser and ultimately see the Pirates capture the Alabama 6A Boys Soccer Championship in 2009.

Over the years, at least twelve boys and nine girls playing on FHS/Fairhope Soccer Club teams have enjoyed scholarship support and reached their goals of playing college soccer. Many have returned as volunteers others on the Saturday morning sidelines.

The impact of soccer on this entire community is literally visible in the line out the door we see on a tournament weekend. We’re packed and I know other restaurants downtown and on Greeno Road are as well. We love seeing a tournament come to town!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the City not just paying to finish the complex? The City matched FSTC in a significant combined pledge of $600,000   to build the concession/restroom facility. As a true public-private partnership, FSC is required to provide the rest.

Why am I paying for a facility used by so many kids who don’t live in Fairhope? The vast majority of children playing our fields call 36532 home. Our games and tournaments include players from Daphne, around the state and beyond just as programs in other cities also understand the value of sports tourism.
